Fighter

“Injustice moves me to act. It’s a major reason why I am seeking the NDP nomination. Our shared commitment to fighting for a more fair, equitable and just Canada is what unites New Democrats.”
- Nadia Verrelli

Her prowess inside the kickboxing ring aside, Nadia Verrelli has always been a fighter - someone who can’t be blocked from a commitment, who will find a way to break through barriers.

She learned this at a young age, growing up in a household where finances were an obstacle for her and her family, where she fought to manage both school and work starting at age 14. She took a job serving customers at the local European bakery. She succeeded all the way through grad school - though many of the jobs she did along the way were challenging, and taught the importance of workers’ rights on the job.

Then at the age of 32 she encountered a different kind battle - a diagnosis of primary progressive Multiple Sclerosis. It slowed her down, but not for long. Since then, MS has been a fight that Nadia has been winning.

Nadia focused her academic career back on the injustices which moved her to learn about politics, law and justice in the first place. She turned her attention to the fight to protect women and children from domestic violence. After years of research and writing, she is nearing completion on a book on this topic.

“I know that the federal government can strengthen the criminal code, can engage in a public education campaign and can provide more funding for women’s shelters to better protect women trapped in abusive relations. Other countries are doing it, so can we.” - Nadia Verrelli

Her most recent fight has been the effort to save Laurentian University, where she appeared regularly in the media and called out all the leaders who failed the institution, particularly the federal Liberal MPs. See Nadia’s Op Ed here (Link).
